History:
While Togainu no Chi has multiple routes, Akira will be coming from the common route before there are any divergences into separate routes.
Personality:
- One of the first things to understand about Akira and his personality is that he's from a Boy's Love game. As the protagonist, he's subject to certain stereotypes and ultimately his character isn't delved into as deeply as it could be. However, if paid close enough attention, Akira demonstrates through his thoughts and actions a very distinctive personality.
At first glance, Akira is a typical character: his standoffish body language reflects his equally silent and cold attitude, instantly pegging him as a loner disinterested in any and all personal contact. He barely pays attention when spoken to, and if he listens, he very rarely has the interest to bother with giving an answer. And if he does, the answer is most of the time not all that fulfilling as it comes in a handful of two or three words. The most emotion he expresses is during his participation in Bl@ster, a street "sport" developed after the war particularly aimed at those trained for war but never having gotten the chance to enter combat. In fact, Akira's life seems to revolve around this "game", his only distraction being a job at a factory. His silent and disinterested persona, as well as the "lost" look in his eyes (never displaying emotion), earns him the nickname LOST, as known by most Bl@ster participants.
His only real contact is a young man named Keisuke, a "childhood friend" from their days in an orphanage together. Friend is a strong word considering the way Akira acts, but in contrast to everyone else, he spends a considerable amount of his time with Keisuke at the other's preference. If thought on hard enough, he would consider Keisuke a friend and his only friend, at that. Unfortunately, he doesn't give Keisuke much more than what seems to be "tolerance".
So, there's Akira and Bl@ster: cold, silent, standoffish, aggressive when in battle, detached (from everyone and everything) when not.
And then there's Akira and Keisuke: cold, silent, a few words offered in lieu of real conversation and allowing the other to always tag along with him (for whatever reason Keisuke would want to, as far as Akira is concerned).
It's not until a series of events unravel that Akira's true personality starts to show via his thoughts and actions, as well as the realization of the effects the way he acts and treats others around him. Falsely accused of murder, Akira agrees to travel to Toshima to enter a game known as Igura/Igra with the intention to rise through the ranks of the game and confront and defeat the one known as Il Re. It's here that Akira finds himself for the first time experiencing and learning things both about himself and others. For one, Keisuke becomes almost immediately involved as well, having followed Akira to Toshima. Despite Akira being against it, he too joins Igura/Igra with the plan to help out Akira in any way possible.
However, an argument between the two causes Keisuke to disappear on Akira. Akira at first believes Keisuke will return on his own, but he never does. Instead, Akira is forced to search for his best friend in the dirty and dangerous streets of Toshima, the longer he searches, the less chance there is hope Keisuke is safe. Keisuke's disappearance impacts him greatly, causing him to reflect and realize many things about his relationship with not only Keisuke, but his attitude towards others in general. His best friend's presence (or lack thereof) effects him more than he realizes: worry and fear clouding his mind day in and day out. When he finally does find Keisuke, any hope lingering at finding the other is shattered when he realizes that his friend has taken the drug called "Line", a popular drug in the game Igura that strengthens a person but also can cause adverse effects mentally. After losing Keisuke again, Akira has to decide whether or not his friend is worth risking his life over in order to save. His loneliness without him is apparent, as well as his dependence on his best friend to not only feel needed, but to feel necessary as well.
Despite his detachment, those he does come to care about or consider friends are subject to Akira's fierce loyalty. Whether it's with his insistence on doing absolutely anything possible to return Keisuke back to his old self or saving Rin after he betrays Akira for his Dog Tags, it's a very obvious trait. It's not necessarily to be confused with kindness or "being a good guy", because he's only willing to do it for certain people, but if you're one of those "certain", he's loyal for life. Akira is also easily suspicious of others, not finding very many people trustworthy. He's grown up in a world where trust isn't worth very much and easily broken and he's learned to live without it. Anyone who offers a helping hand is suspicious in Akira's book, especially when they are not asking for anything in return. On his quest to save Keisuke from the drug Line, he has a meeting with Arbitro, the overseer of the game Igura. Arbitro offers him food and although he's clearly hungry, he doubts Arbitro's proposed sincerity, choosing to ultimately avoid the hospitality (it is a choice in the game, if you do take Arbitro's hospitality, you end up with one of the Bad Endings -- Akira's suspicious feelings are right on the money).
He's a very determined individual when he decides on something, making him a formidable opponent even to those who would otherwise be able to outmatch him. His determination extends further than just in fighting, however, as seen with his steps to return Keisuke to normal despite severe assault from his friend. Concern about his friends is another basic part of his personality. He also has a rather large and realistic sense of life and death, and is fearful when presented with the possibility of death. It's one of the key features about Akira that makes him unusual to most protagonists is that he does have a great sense of what's realistic and what's not and doesn't have a carefree attitude about dying. He wants to live, no matter how shitty his life seems to be and he wants to live on his own terms due to his stubborn nature.
It's also important to note that while Akira's stoic and defiant, cool personality is, while a prominent part of his personality, very much not a character strength. In fact, it's quite fake, serving as a mask and wall that has been heavily built up over the years to protect something inside. While it's not seen as much in the anime, the game and its various endings shows a side of Akira we do not get to often see: him without his wall. The wall protects, in fact, a very fragile psyche of a young man trying to make it on his own. The longer he is in Toshima, the weaker that wall becomes and shows us a varying array of possibilities. He is easily manipulated, easily broken and divided into something that is nothing but a shell of his proposed self that we are exposed to. In one ending, for example, he's kept drugged and as a human pet. In another ending (a main route ending option, even), he is nothing more than a sex driven individual, serving as Shiki's...uhmmm... fuck toy (ok ok i said it, we're all adults here :( ) and being quite content with it.
Even in the main route of the game, Akira is prone to and does develop a case of Stockholm Syndrome, despite his constant wishes to leave. Although he's worn and broken down by Shiki, he does manage to retain some resilience, but it's weak and easily crushed. No matter which ending you get in the main route, he never is able to escape Shiki and his influence.
Abilities:
- His blood is technically a neutralizer for the drug LINE in canon, but it wouldn't have any effect on people who have not taken LINE. Other than that he's Most proficient in Close-Quarter Combat: particularly with his fists but he can wield a knife decently, as well. All-in-all, he's pretty much a normal human.
